BOUSD Zoom. Fanning Boom.

I Zoomed into the school board meeting last Thursday. It’s a far cry from sitting in chambers and participating face-to-face. The little windows leave much to be desired.

First thing you notice is that almost no one but maybe the speaker offers any eye contact, everyone seems distracted with something off camera. Obviously few have given any thought to background or positioning themselves centered in the screen. Okay, sounds petty but this lack of a professional touch bugs me.

Getting down to business.

With few housekeeping matters to address, the meeting jumped straight into Public Comment. Cued up to be read were almost 50 public comments either posted via the district website or submitted via email. A ponderous amount of opinion to bail through. Nicole Colon and Annette Arora took turns and did a very good job with them.

I must say though that the reading was pretty flat and lacked the typical  exuberance one would expect if delivered by the author. Ah well, a sacrifice we’ll have to endure during the new normal.

It was encouraging though to find out that 96 folks zoomed in to watch the meeting. Sure, I’ve seen two or three times that many crammed into an SRO meeting in chambers… but the extra effort and inconvenience of a virtual meeting makes those who watched warriors in my book.

Mostly a fanning of the flames.

Here’s where everything unraveled. Thanks to an amateur wannabe activist and a barely employed yellow journalist, both non-Breans, once again spreading the deception connecting William Fanning to the KKK, all but a couple of the rambling rants was anchored in a nothing burger.

Look, like the blog’s borrowed tagline says, “Everyone is entitled to their opinion but not their own facts.”

Okay, the facts were attested to long ago by Dr. Sarah Doherty, Assistant Professor of U.S. & Public History at North Park University in Chicago, whose area of scholarly expertise is the Ku Klux Klan of the 1920s. Dr. Doherty concludes, “Anyone who chooses to use [these documents] outside a proper historical context without establishing clear provenance is acting recklessly.”

Naysayers can continue in their misguided beliefs or take a moment to actually get the truth. Click this: Dougherty Statement – and I’ll move on.

The American Spring.

One month ago, in eight minutes and forty-six seconds, George Floyd was murdered and a new era of civil rights activism was launched. You’ve all watched the memorial services, protests both violent and peaceful and marches right up to the White House. I won’t linger on any more description than that.

Black Lives Matter has evolved into a multicolor phenomenon that is turning white privilege inside out and, I hope and pray, will lead us into the realization of “the dream” voiced at the March on Washington in 1963.

We have bigger fish to fry than the fraudulently contested name of an elementary school.

We need to create the curriculum, programs and policies that will, “…transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood.” (MLKJr.)

Final Thoughts.

Members of the BOUSD Board of Directors, Dr. Mason, district staff, teachers, parents and students… it is within you all to rise to the occasion, to discard the conspiracy theories and those who obstinately attempt to perpetuate them.

The time to finally, after 400 years, do the right thing is now and you’re the ones to do it.

BOTA Pressures BOUSD Board.

Within an hour of Gail Lyons, Nicole Colon and Kerri Kropke storming out the BOUSD Board meeting Monday night, the BOTA/CTA shill Jim Rogers flooded Brea teachers with the message below.

Reading between the lines.

Hi BOTA Members,

Thank you SO much to everyone who attended and/or spoke at the board meeting this evening. We achieved our goal of packing the chambers and definitely made a statement. For those of you who were not there to witness it, the bond vote unfortunately failed. We cannot afford to lose momentum now.

Please read the following message from Jim Rogers, our CTA staff member for BOTA. Jim is also a teacher of many years and Brea resident, and he has our back! We must take action!

There is nothing on the BOTA website about this “demonstration” and no members vote was taken to ensure a consensus. When the “blue shirts” were commanded to stand by that Elmer Gantry on steroids, Joe Bartell, they did so with obvious hesitation.

Why? According to “blue shirts” that contacted us on the patio after the meeting and via email yesterday… BOTA members are as conflicted as the community at large, especially about the golden board perks.

Dear Members of BOTA,

Tonight’s School Board meeting did not go well for the children you serve, let alone your working conditions. A big thanks to everyone for wearing there BOTA shirts yesterday. For those members that were able to make the Board meeting last night, your presence was very important. Your strength as a unit comes when it’s time to stand together.

Tonight the Board failed to reach a super-majority to place a bond on the March ballot. This holds huge ramifications to BOTA members other than working in substandard classrooms and school sites overall.

Because of the age of the schools, plumbing and sewers, electrical, plaster and paint, roofing, and so much more updating is greatly needed. Too many classrooms have been displaced over the years. This is the obvious need for a bond.

What you don’t think of right away is the other complications that will come without a bond. Fixing the problems that pop up each year drains the General Fund of the monies that provide your wages, health benefits, and retirement payments. When any new monies are needed to fix breaks at the aging sites, there is less left to provide raises and enhancements to benefits.

BOUSD has $38,000,000 now to fix any of these items!

A bond must be passed in order for your bargaining team to be able to make agreements that improve your standing.

This is the union’s entire interest in this, not teachers or students, but in maintaining the union’s power.

It’s time for BOTA to show Carrie Flanders it’s strength! Paul Ruiz has been against the last three bond measures, and therefore we must not waste our energy on him, (at least until he runs for re-election.)

So, the union wants to bully Carrie… remember that folks!

Carrie and Paul both want a bond! They also want a board that isn’t taking money from students or is compromised by their need to perpetuate personal benefits.

The November Board meeting will be Monday, November 18, 2019, at 6:30 p.m.

WE NEED EVERY MEMBER TO SAVE THIS DATE!

Your strength in numbers will be needed to pass the bond, however, we must show Carrie Flanders that you have the strength to make it happen.

I wonder if Gail Lyons will make a copy of this message and, with tear filled eyes and quaking voice, wave it at the next meeting as another example of bullying?

Monday night she overlooked the message sent to parents during the campaign for Measure K to boycott downtown businesses – a clear attempt at bullying.

We need at least 150 members to show up at the November 18th Board meeting. Your presence alone will do the trick, but it’s appropriate for anyone who would like to speak also. (Speaking is not an expectation.)

Parading 150 red shirted teachers around (better than brown shirts) will do little to advance their cause… union power. Recent polls suggest roughly 80% of Brea voters support rescinding health insurance subsidies before working out the details of a school bond and putting it on the ballot.

That’s 120X your little band of red shirts. Get rid of the golden perk and Brea voters are inclined to support a well designed school bond.

We are going to wear RED FOR ED November 18th! We are then going to turn the Boardroom RED!!!

This communication was written BEFORE the board meeting, evidence of the foreknowledge of their weak position. They anticipated defeat and played right into their own shortcomings. Brea teachers and parents, for the most part, are too smart to fall for their strategy of intimidation and misinformation.

Bond vs. Health Benefit.

An open letter to the BOUSD Board and our community from Brea resident and business owner Dwight Manley.

Bond

I am writing this to clarify my position regarding the BOUSD board member’s compensation. The following 12 points summarize my considered opinion:

1.   I view the privilege of being elected and serving on the board as a “volunteer” position.

2.  Our schools have been hit hard by rising pension costs, which has resulted in severe reductions in funding for basic class needs, sports programs, school events and teacher’s salaries.

3.  I deeply sympathize with the teachers that are having to dig into their own pockets for supplies, and parents that are repeatedly hit up with requests for funding.

I especially find the school district’s use of children to be the messengers for these pleas to be unacceptable. Making a child return to class with a signed form saying “No” and having to be involved in a parent’s inability or unwillingness to “give” is not healthy for a child.

4.  As a self-made person who has done well in my life, I feel a responsibility to give back. Consequently, I receive numerous requests weekly from BOUSD students, teachers and parents.

5.  I have extra joy in providing funds for those less fortunate. One example is funding the senior night which runs over $100 per student. I feel every student should be able to attend regardless of their parent’s financial situation. Every student should be able to attend.

6.  Every time I sign a check, I think of the thousands of dollars per month the BOUSD board is taking for their “volunteer” position. Over the last 20 years, this is over $1,000,000 and some years was over $120,000.

These dollars would have a real impact on hundreds of lives immediately. Imagine a free breakfast program with supervision at the Jr High for parents that go to work early and could drop their children off at 7am?

7.  I’ve challenged members of the Board to drop this “benefit” for several years now, and they’ve repeatedly refused.

8.  Again and again I have told the Board that I would support a bond measure if;

a.  They drop their health insurance and only receive their stipend.

b.  A bond be tightly regulated with a sub 4% interest rate; no refinancing to pull out more money as was done in the past; the projects be “front loaded” meaning we get as much as can be built in 36 months.

I don’t like the money sitting around for 20 years unused like Olinda School did; a specific list of projects that improve the school’s ability to teach kids and not have a “Cal K-12” taking 15% off the top to feed to do their work.

The overseer of any funds needs to be a publicly bid process with a sub 10% fee. I don’t want to see bond money spent on fencing etc.; the district already has plenty in reserves to do that if its truly that vital.

9.  Various terms have been thrown around to describe my stance; “political blackmail”, “extortion”, “threats.” Those are all being used to deflect and attack me, rather than staying focused on the only issue at hand.

Kids and teachers are woefully short of funds, and the board, some living in million + dollar homes, are taking those funds for themselves. I equate this to people working at a food bank for the needy, taking the food home for themselves.

10.  Having health insurance for “volunteers” creates a huge conflict of interest. If the board members can’t afford their own insurance – they become dependent on the benefit.

Those that can afford it, besides being greedy in my opinion, would have to change doctors if they lost it, and as we all know, that’s not desirable. Why would we have such a personal, emotional and important thing be injected into a position that requires 100% selfless actions?

11.  Our own City council does not have such a “perk”.

12.  Some say “The bond initiative and health insurance issues shouldn’t be linked.” As stated above, having this “perk” is too personal and too important to not play a role in decisions.

If we have $150,000,000 to spend from a bond, no matter how tight the controls are, we can’t have a repeat of the horrific sale to Hines of the old school farm for pennies on the dollar, by a board that thought nothing of taking over $120,000 personally per year, while supposedly so low on funds, they had to do that deal.

Imagine the district having the $71,000,000 that Hines received from Avalon Bay just for a piece of paper saying they can build 653 apartments on our old school farm. We would not be in this position if they hadn’t done that.

Final Thoughts.

So, there you have the gist of my thinking and why I’m taking this public stance. We can’t waste another dollar on a board member’s health insurance until each and every teacher doesn’t have to send one of those letters home asking for money. Until every coach doesn’t have to send out letters or have players canvas the town for money to buy basic items.

Brea is where my heart is. I’m from here, I went to school here and my mom is buried here. I will be buried here. I will always try to help our community and when needed, step up to defend it.
